Road Safety Council 44th Anniversary Ceremony and Together We Make Hong Kong Roads Safer Campaign successfully held

The following is issued on behalf of the Road Safety Council:

     The Road Safety Council 44th Anniversary Ceremony and Together We Make Hong Kong Roads Safer Campaign was successfully held this afternoon (November 1) at Temple Mall North, Wong Tai Sin.

     Speaking at the ceremony, the Chairman of the Road Safety Council and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Mr Lau Yip-shing, said that the Road Safety Council has held various road safety publicity and education campaigns with a view to enhancing public awareness of road safety since its establishment 44 years ago.

     The total number of registered vehicles in Hong Kong was about 830 000 as of August this year, representing an increase of 2 per cent as compared with the figure at the same period last year. The Council is continuing to hold publicity campaigns on student pedestrian safety, elderly pedestrian safety, cycling safety, anti-drink driving, anti-drug driving and driving attentively.

     Mr Lau expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the members of the Council and the working partners for their contributions and support. He appealed to the public to continue to make joint efforts to realise the vision of "Zero Accidents on the Road, Hong Kong's Goal".

     Other officiating guests included the Chairman of the Road Safety Research Committee and Acting Deputy Commissioner for Transport (Planning and Technical Services), Mr Wilson Pang, and the Chairlady of the Road Safety Campaign Committee, Miss Ma Ka-wai.
