SHA meets Director General of Department of Culture of Guangdong Province (with photos)
***************************************************************************************
The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, today (October 30) met with the Director General of the Department of Culture of Guangdong Province, Mr Wang Yiyang, in Guangzhou to explore opportunities in strengthening cultural exchange between Guangdong and Hong Kong in the future.

Mr Lau said, "The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government has always valued its ties with Guangdong Province. The standard of Hong Kong arts groups has been rising and they have been touring more frequently in Mainland China and overseas in recent years. This year marks the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR, and seven performances have already been conducted by six Hong Kong arts groups in Guangzhou and Shenzhen."

He noted that the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area can bring new opportunities to the three places. As people from the three places are deeply influenced by the Lingnan culture and people-to-people exchanges are frequent, artistic works can thus resonate easily and create scope for collaboration. In addition, the HKSAR Government will increase the recurrent subvention to the nine major arts groups and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, subsidising artists and arts groups for exchanges in Mainland China and abroad.

Before commencing his visit to Guangzhou, Mr Lau travelled to Zhuhai, where he visited the Zhuhai Huafa & CPAA Grand Theatre and the Zhuhai Grand Theatre. He also met and exchanged views with Zhuhai government officials. Mr Lau went to Macau yesterday afternoon (October 29) and met with the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of Macau, Mr Tam Chon-weng, and the President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macau, Mr Leung Hio-ming, to gain insights on cultural preservation of the historic centre of Macau. Mr Lau also attended the 31st Macao International Music Festival.

In 2002, Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macau established a platform for cultural co-operation. During the 18th Greater Pearl River Delta Cultural Co-operation Meeting held this June, the three places signed a tripartite memorandum of intention on promotion of cultural exchanges under the Belt and Road Initiative. The three places agreed to enhance communication and discussion, and to promote cultural exchanges and co-operation with Belt and Road countries and regions. They also discussed and concluded a memorandum of intention on youth cultural exchange to strengthen the tripartite co-operation on this front.

Mr Lau will return to Hong Kong tonight after concluding his visit to Guangzhou.
