Transcript of remarks by SEN

Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, on the modified arrangements of municipal solid waste (MSW) charging after attending the opening ceremony of the 12th Eco Expo Asia today (October 26):

Reporter: I want to know why is there such a change and who are the main supporters to the change? Any opposition?

Secretary for the Environment: In March this year we announced the proposed details for the MSW charging, and after that we conducted more than 60 meetings and engagement processes, including two large-scale public forums. We are hearing the voice of the public and the stakeholders, particularly those involving the private sector, waste collection and delivery, and also those in property management. They are providing good feedback in general and supporting the charging (scheme) in principle. But at the same time, on certain details, they propose certain modifications to enhance the operations of the charging scheme. In brief, there are two sectors, one is the property cleaning companies, the other is the private waste collectors. So they are happy with our modified proposals in general, because we are keeping close engagement with them, and we look forward to having their support, so that we can move the scheme forward. Thank you.
