SCED visits Tuen Mun District (with photos)

     The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Edward Yau, visited Tuen Mun District today (October 24) to get a better grasp of the district's latest developments and needs, meeting members of the Tuen Mun District Council (TMDC) and visiting a school and a seafood market in the District.

     Mr Yau first visited Chung Sing Benevolent Society Mrs Aw Boon Haw Secondary School. He was briefed by school representatives on its vision and mission of teaching non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students. Mr Yau chatted with teachers and students about their teaching and learning. He also shared with them views on issues including tourism and economic development. The school has been admitting NCS students since 2003 and is committed to promoting inclusive education and providing NCS students with appropriate curriculum support and diversified extra-curricular learning opportunities.

     He then toured Sam Shing Street (also known as Sam Shing Hui Seafood Market), chatting with various seafood store owners to better understand their business. The district landmark is located at the former site of the Castle Peak Wholesale Fish Market. After the wholesale market's removal in 2010, the TMDC sought to turn the seafood market in Castle Peak Bay into a district tourist attraction to revitalise the local tourism industry.

     Mr Yau also learnt about the future development plan for the location adjacent to Castle Peak Bay Typhoon Shelter. He was pleased to note that facilities such as landscape displays, a pavilion, a children's playground, a viewing platform and a promenade will be built at the waterfront open space, which on one hand will provide recreational facilities for local residents, while on the other will enhance the environment and attract more tourists.

     Mr Yau said that the Tourism Commission has been working with the Hong Kong Tourism Board to promote the special features of Hong Kong, for instance by encouraging visitors to savour local delicacies in order to experience local culture. The Government also encourages the tourism sector to continue enriching various travel products to make them more diverse and attractive.

     Before concluding his visit, Mr Yau met with TMDC members to exchange views on district matters relating to traffic, tourism and local economic development.
