Queen of African music Angélique Kidjo returns to Hong Kong (with photos)
*************************************************************************
Regarded by Time magazine as "Africa's premier diva", three-time Grammy Award winner Angélique Kidjo will return for a concert at the World Cultures Festival 2017 - Vibrant Africa on November 3. Kidjo made her Hong Kong début in 2015, winning wide acclaim for her uplifting voice and energy. In the upcoming concert she will pay tribute to the inspirational genius of three divas who each had distinctive styles, with Kidjo adding her own unique voice to provide an unparallelled musical experience.

Born in Benin in West Africa, Kidjo started performing on stage aged 6. Her music blends African pop, Caribbean zouk, Congolese rumba, jazz, gospel and Latin styles. For this concert, Kidjo will pay tribute to three late and lauded singers, namely Celia Cruz from Cuba, known as the "Queen of Salsa"; Miriam Makeba, dubbed "Mama Africa"; and Nina Simone, an African American singer-songwriter celebrated as the "High Priestess of Soul".

Kidjo has received numerous honours and awards over her career, including being named one of the 100 Most Inspiring Women in the World by the Guardian. Winner of two Grammy Awards for her albums "Djin Djin" (2008) and "EVE" (2014), Kidjo received a third for her "SINGS" album, recorded with the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra in 2016.

Kidjo has also actively participated in social welfare activities. Appointed as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2002, she is a passionate advocate for the education and rights of children and young people. In 2007, she established the Batonga Foundation, which seeks to provide secondary and higher education for girls in Africa.

The concert by Angélique Kidjo will be held at 8pm on November 3 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall. Tickets priced at $180, $280, $380, and $480 are now available at URBTIX (www.urbtix.hk). For credit card telephone bookings, please call 2111 5999.
