Speech by S for IT at SUNeVision MEGA Plus Xperience Ceremony (English only)(with photo)
****************************************************************************************
Following is the speech by the Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Mr Nicholas W Yang, at the SUNeVision MEGA Plus Xperience Ceremony today (October 18):

Allen (Vice Chairman and Non-Executive Director of SUNeVision Holdings Limited and Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Non-Property Portfolio Business of Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited, Mr Allen Fung), Peter (Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of SUNeVision Holdings Limited, Mr Peter Yan), distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

Good afternoon. Thank you for inviting me to the MEGA Plus Xperience Ceremony, witnessing the grand opening of this impressive facility. Last December, I joined the Topping Out Ceremony of MEGA Plus. Just in 10 months' time, the facility is now in full service. Look at the Hong Kong efficiency!

I congratulate SUNeVision on the successful completion of this state-of-the-art Tier-4-ready data centre. It is built on the first greenfield site dedicated for data centre development. The opening of MEGA Plus further expands the data centre cluster here in Tseung Kwan O, and shows the confidence of the industry in Hong Kong in becoming the data centre hub of the Asia-Pacific region.

Data centres are essential to the development of Hong Kong's digital economy and our position as a trading and financial centre. As I have proudly preached to our overseas investors, visitors and counterparts, Hong Kong is a prime location for setting up data centres in the region. The reliability level of our electricity power supply is supreme, exceeding 99.999 per cent. Among the 11 submarine cable systems in Hong Kong, three landed here in Tseung Kwan O. In the coming two years, two more submarine cable systems will be commissioned, including Facebook and Google's Pacific Light Cable Network, which will connect Hong Kong and Los Angeles directly in 2018 with a capacity of 120 Tbps. Another system connecting Hong Kong and Guam with a capacity of 48 Tbps will land in Tseung Kwan O in 2019.

Hong Kong is home to about 3 700 regional headquarters and offices of the world's leading multinational corporations. And our position as an international financial centre naturally attracts significant international data flows. In addition, Hong Kong's sound legal system, pro-business environment, robust enforcement for data protection and privacy, as well as free flow of talent and information, make Hong Kong the trusted gateway to the Mainland of China. With these advantages, the demand of data centre services in Hong Kong will continue to grow rapidly.

The Government will continue to increase the supply of data centres by releasing more dedicated data centre sites for high-tier data centre development, and by facilitating redevelopment and conversion of industrial buildings into data centres.

In closing, I would like to thank SUNeVision for investing in Hong Kong's data centre future. I wish you every success in your business endeavours.

     Thank you very much.
