First ever large-scale HK design exhibition in Chicago opens (with photos)

      The Chicago edition of the "Confluence · 20+ Creative Ecologies of Hong Kong" exhibition opened yesterday (October 13, Chicago time) till November 4, with the timely news that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government would accord due importance to the promotion of design and devote more resources to its development.

     Addressing the opening ceremony, the Director of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York (HKETONY), Ms Joanne Chu said the Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam had announced that funding of US$128 million would be injected into the CreateSmart Initiative, which aims to nurture young talents and encourage projects that promote Hong Kong designers and brands.

     The government will also provide more resources to the Hong Kong Design Centre to implement measures to reinforce Hong Kong's status as a city of design excellence in Asia and foster closer links between Hong Kong’s design industry and other design cities overseas to open up new markets for Hong Kong.

      Presented by the Hong Kong Design Centre, "Confluence · 20+" is a roving exhibition featuring signature works by 20 outstanding designers. The exhibition series is sponsored by Create Hong Kong and supported by HKETONY to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR. It had sojourned to Milan, Hong Kong and Seoul earlier this year.

     The Chicago exhibition will be the biggest and most engaging, allowing visitors to explore Hong Kong's dynamic creative ecologies. Workshops and activities by participating designers include a multi-sensory experience of "Hong Kong style" tea ceremony, a furniture wall and play lab for visitors to experiment with compact living space, bamboo bundling craft, upcycling of disposable cutlery, photoshoot with heritage costumes and ceramics workshops.

      Ms Chu said she hoped this exhibition will herald more collaboration between the two cities in the future.

     During her visit to Chicago, Ms Chu also met with interlocutors in Chicago, including World Business Chicago, Chicago Council on Global Affairs, Millennium Park Foundation and Hong Kong Business Association of the Midwest.
