Welcome home ceremony for HKSAR delegation to 13th National Games of the People's Republic of China (with photos)

     The Government today (September 29) hosted a welcome home ceremony for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) delegation to celebrate the triumphant return of Hong Kong's athletes. The athletes captured two gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals at the 13th National Games of the People's Republic of China held in Tianjin. Their total of 16 medals is more than twice the number won by the HKSAR at the last National Games. Furthermore, about 60 per cent of the athletes finished in the top eight, which is Hong Kong's best result since its first participation in the National Games. 
 
     Speaking at the ceremony, the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, said that elite athletes from all Mainland provinces and cities took part in the Games, making it a very competitive event. The Hong Kong athletes demonstrated the spirit of Hong Kong with strong determination and perseverance during the competitions. Their achievements make Hong Kong people feel proud, and they serve as role models for the younger generation, he added. He also expressed his gratitude for the support rendered to the athletes by the delegation leader, coaches, medical team of the Hong Kong Sports Institute and the accompanying working staff during the Games period.
 
     Mr Lau said he expects the athletes to gain further success in the Jakarta Asian Games next year, making for more remarkable performances in the international sports arena following their valuable experiences gained at the 13th National Games.
 
     The 13th National Games was held between August 27 and September 8 in Tianjin. The HKSAR sent 254 athletes to take part in 22 final competitions, namely swimming, athletics, badminton, canoeing, cycling, equestrian, fencing, golf, gymnastics, handball, judo, karatedo, roller hockey, sailing, shooting, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, beach volleyball, windsurfing and wushu (taolu).
 
     Hong Kong won 16 medals in competitive sports events at the National Games this year, with the gold medallists being Miss Pang Yao and Miss Yang Qianyu (cycling), and Mr Leung Chun-wing (cycling). The seven silvers came from Mr Chris Cheng (karatedo), Mr Nicholas Choi (fencing), Mr Ko Siu-wai and Mr Leung Chun-wing (cycling), Mr Kenneth To (swimming), Miss Jacqueline Siu (equestrian), Mr Cheung King-lok (cycling), and Miss Meng Zhaojuan (cycling); while bronze medals were won by Mr Howard Hung (karatedo), Miss Grace Lau (karatedo), Mr Fong Hoi-sun (fencing), Miss Clarissa Lyra (equestrian), Miss Lee Wai-sze (cycling, two bronzes), and Mr Cheung Siu-lun, Mr Kyle Chan, Mr Nicholas Choi and Mr Cheung Ka-long (fencing).
 
     In addition to the original competitive sports events, the General Administration of Sport of China also introduced sport-for-all events for the participation of the general public and related organisations in the National Games this year. Hong Kong athletes also performed excellently in this category and won six medals. A gold medal was won by Mr Shoji Chan (sport climbing); silver medals were won by Mr Tang Siu-hei (sport climbing) and Mr Ma Pak-hong (roller sports); and bronze medals were won by Ms Leung Lai-ping (wushu), Mr Anson Chan (roller sports) and Mr Yu Long (roller sports).

     Today's ceremony was held in the Conference Hall, West Wing, Central Government Offices. The officiating guests also included the President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, and Chairman of the Organising Committee (OC) of the HKSAR Delegation, Mr Timothy Fok; the Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs and Honorary Adviser of the HKSAR Delegation, Mrs Betty Fung; the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services and Deputy Head of the HKSAR Delegation, Ms Michelle Li; and the Vice Chairman of the OC and Chairman of the Executive Committee, Mr Tony Yue. The officiating guests presented commendation certificates to athletes who achieved outstanding results in the 13th National Games. The Commissioner for Sports and OC member, Mr Yeung Tak-keung, also attended the ceremony.
