EMSD receives award from Association of Energy Engineers (with photos)
**********************************************************************
The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) on September 26 (Atlanta time) received from the Association of Energy Engineers the Regional Institutional Energy Management Award for the Asia-Pacific region for the Department's outstanding performance in developing, organising, managing and implementing its comprehensive energy management programme.

The EMSD has over the years been committed to implementing energy-saving and emission-reduction by taking forward the reduction of energy consumption, the enhancement of energy efficiency and the adoption of renewable energy. The energy intensity of Hong Kong has decreased more than 26 per cent over the past decade, a performance ranked among the best in the member economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation group.

The Acting Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, Mr Alfred Sit, represented the department in receiving the award at the presentation ceremony in Atlanta in the United States. He expressed his gratitude for the hard work of EMSD colleagues, and said he was delighted that the efforts of the department in the area of energy saving and emission reduction have been recognised. Noting the many challenges ahead in promoting energy saving, he said that the EMSD will continue to implement various programmes in enhancing energy efficiency and adopt new and renewable energy for a sustainable environment.

The EMSD and the Hospital Authority (HA) jointly received the Regional Energy Project of the Year Award for the Asia-Pacific region, an award commending innovative energy-management projects. Since 2015, the EMSD has been co-operating with the HA in installing high-efficiency chillers in various hospitals, and engaged the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in verifying their cost effectiveness, which concluded that an annual electricity consumption of around 13 million kWh has been saved.

The Chief Executive of the HA, Dr Leung Pak-yin, said he was delighted by the award. He said that the HA attached great importance to the implementation of energy-saving measures in the hospitals, and that in addition to saving costs in energy consumption it can also contribute to environmental protection. He added that the HA would continue to explore opportunities in carrying out energy-saving measures in various hospitals and would collaborate with the EMSD in introducing more innovative energy management projects.
