******************************************************************************************
The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, today (September 22) attended the 3rd China-Central and Eastern European Countries Cultural Cooperation Forum in Hangzhou, at which he delivered a speech introducing Hong Kong's cultural development and its cultural ties with Central and Eastern European countries.

In his speech, Mr Lau pointed out that Hong Kong has established cultural co-operation frameworks with various places. Among the 16 participating Central and Eastern European countries at the Forum, Hong Kong has already signed Memoranda of Understanding on Cultural Cooperation with Croatia and Hungary to provide mutual platforms for art and cultural exchanges. Mr Lau expressed the wish that Hong Kong can sign Memoranda of Understanding on Cultural Cooperation with more Central and Eastern European countries, thus strengthening cultural co-operation with them.

Mr Lau noted that Hong Kong's cultural development will soon reach another milestone. The construction of the West Kowloon Cultural District is making good progress and showcases the determination and commitment of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in promoting cultural and creative industries, thus further consolidating Hong Kong's position as a cultural metropolis, he said.

The China-Central and Eastern European Countries Cultural Cooperation Forum, which is held biannually, was initiated by China. It is an important mechanism for China and Central and Eastern European countries to foster broad cultural collaboration. This year, the theme of the Forum is "Culture‧ Exchange‧ Cooperation‧Sharing".

During his stay in Hangzhou, Mr Lau and representatives from Hong Kong cultural organisations including the Council Chairman of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Professor Stephen Chow; the Chairman of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Dr Wilfred Wong; the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Arts Development, Mr Vincent Chow; and the Executive Director of Performing Arts of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, Mr Louis Yu, met and exchanged views with the Minister of Culture, Mr Luo Shugang and the Director-General of the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture, Mr Jin Xingsheng, on co-operation opportunities. They also visited cultural facilities in Hangzhou.

Mr Lau will attend the 11th Hangzhou Cultural & Creative Industry Expo tomorrow (September 23) morning. He will depart for Ningbo in the afternoon to attend the Lancang-Mekong Cultural Cooperation Forum.
