Construction Safety Week 2017 will be held from today (September 21) to September 26. Under the theme "Workers' Behaviour", a series of events will be held which includes the Construction Safety Week Conference, visits to construction sites with an exemplary safety performance, the Considerate Contractors Site Award Scheme Award Presentation Ceremony and the first Construction Safety Week Carnival.

Officiating at the launch ceremony, the Secretary for Development, Mr Michael Wong, said that the Government has implemented a number of measures to enhance construction safety at public works projects through the adoption of a safety management system, safety training and a promotion campaign which achieved remarkable results. He said that the Government will put workers' behaviour in focus by studying behaviour that could affect site safety, and will also share the findings with the industry to formulate measures to enhance safety at construction sites.

Also officiating at the ceremony, the Chairman of the Construction Industry Council (CIC), Mr Chan Ka-kui, said that the key to improving workers' behaviour to enhance construction safety lies in joint efforts by stakeholders of the industry to improve working conditions at construction sites. The updated version of the "Guidelines on Planking Arrangement for Providing Working Platforms on Bamboo Scaffolds" released by the CIC this September, which recommended and encouraged the use of closely spaced bamboo scaffolding, shows that the industry is committed to enhancing work safety at source by improving site environments and workers' behaviour.

First launched in 2012, Construction Safety Week is aimed at promoting a zero-accident site environment and a caring environment in the construction industry. The campaign has received tremendous support from various professional groups, organisations, trade associations and labour unions. Details of the campaign are available at its website (
