Chinese Film Panorama 2017 opens tonight (with photos)

Showcasing 16 recent Chinese films, the programme is jointly organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the South China Film Industry Workers Union, in association with Sil-Metropole Organisation Ltd, Southern Film Co Ltd and the China Film Foundation. The films will be screened from today until October 22 at venues including the Grand Theatre of Hong Kong Cultural Centre, the Cinema of the Hong Kong Film Archive and the Lecture Halls of the Hong Kong Space Museum and the Hong Kong Science Museum.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, noted that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the Chinese Film Panorama. He said that Chinese cinema has been booming over the past 20 years, with steady advances taking place in production size and quality. Apart from making box office hits, recent Chinese films have also received accolades at various major international film festivals, making people feel proud of the movies, he added.
Other officiating guests at the opening ceremony included the Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Mr Yang Jian; the President of the China Film Foundation, Mr Zhang Pimin; the Deputy Director-General of the Publicity, Culture and Sports Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, Mr Zhu Ting; the Bureau Chief of the China Radio & TV Hong Kong Bureau of the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of the People's Republic of China, Mr Pan Xiang Ming; the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Michelle Li; the General Vice President and Secretary of the China Film Foundation, Mr Yan Xiaoming; the Chairman of the Hong Kong Film Development Council, Mr Ma Fung-kwok; the Chairman of the South China Film Industry Workers Union, Mr Cheung Hong-tat; the Chairman of Sil-Metropole Organisation Ltd, Mr Chen Yiqi; and the Chairman of Southern Film Co Ltd, Ms Ren Yue.
The opening film, "Born in China", was directed by Lu Chuan, narrated by noted actress Zhou Xun and made in association with Disneynature. Set in the wilds of China, the film features incredible animals like the snow leopard, the golden monkey, the giant panda and the chiru, which have to migrate across China in order to survive the country's spectacular yet brutal seasons. The film won Best Documentary at the 3rd Silk Road International Film Festival.
Other selected films include "Paths of the Soul" (2017) directed by Zhang Yang, "The Blood Hound" (2017) directed by Liu Jianhua, "Young Love Lost" (2017) directed by Xiang Guoqiang, "The Summer is Gone" (2017) directed by Zhang Dalei, "Knife in the Clear Water" (2016) directed by Wang Xuebo, "Hide and Seek" (2016) directed by Liu Jie, "Everybody's Fine" (2016) directed by Zhang Meng, "The Song of Cotton” (2016) directed by Zhu Yuancheng, "Kaili Blues" (2016) directed by Bi Gan, "Crosscurrent" (2016) directed by Yang Chao, "When Larry Met Mary" (2016) directed by Wen Zhang, "Distance" (2016) directed by Xin Yukun, Tan Shijie and Sivaroj Kongsakul and "The Master" (2015) directed by Xu Haofeng.
"Kaili Blues" is in the Guizhou dialect and Putonghua; "Paths of the Soul" is in Tibetan; "Crosscurrent" is in Tibetan and Putonghua; and the other films are in Putonghua. All films have Chinese and English subtitles.
