SCS visits Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (with photos)

Accompanied by the Acting Permanent Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Eddie Mak, Mr Law first met with the Acting Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, Mr Alfred Sit, and the directorate staff. He was briefed on the department’s work in ensuring electrical and mechanical safety for the public, promoting energy saving and carbon emissions reduction, and providing quality electrical and mechanical engineering services to government departments and public bodies.
Mr Law then proceeded to the exhibition area of the Kai Tak District Cooling System, where he was briefed by engineers on how chilled water is produced at the central plants using sea water and then distributed to consumer buildings in the Kai Tak Development (KTD) for air conditioning through the underground water piping network. Mr Law learnt that the system not only enhances energy efficiency but is also one of the key infrastructural projects supporting the sustainable and green development of the KTD area.
Mr Law also toured the Training Workshop and chatted with some technician trainees to better understand their learning experience. The EMSD launched the training programme in 1955 to provide vehicle, mechanical, air-conditioning, electrical and electronics-related skills training. The programme has been providing new blood for both government departments and the trade. To date, over 6 000 technical staff have been trained.
Before concluding his visit, Mr Law met with staff representatives of various grades at a tea gathering to exchange views on matters that concern them. He expressed gratitude to colleagues for their dedication and hard work, and encouraged them to continue to provide quality electrical and mechanical engineering services to the public.
