Hong Kong Customs yesterday (September 12) and today (September 13) seized suspected smuggled products including 4 090 computer central processing units, 492 computer random access memory, about 2.5 kilograms of suspected worked ivory and 152 used smartphones with an estimated market value of about $4.65 million at Lok Ma Chau Control Point.

     Customs Officers yesterday intercepted an outgoing container truck at Lok Ma Chau Control Point for inspection and seized 4 090 computer central processing units, 492 computer random access memory and about 2.5 kilograms of suspected worked ivory from the false compartment of the container truck. The 70-year-old male driver was arrested.

     Customs Officers today intercepted another outgoing container truck at Lok Ma Chau Control Point for inspection and seized 152 used smartphones from the false compartment of the container truck. The 49-year-old male driver was arrested.

     Investigation of both cases is ongoing.

     Smuggling is a serious offence. Under the Import and Export Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.

     Under the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting an endangered species without a licence is liable to a maximum fine of $5 million and imprisonment for two years.
