A team of eight Hong Kong students achieved excellent results in the 2nd International Olympiad of Metropolises (IOM), a multidisciplinary competition for students aged 14 to 18 covering four disciplines: mathematics, informatics, chemistry and physics. The Hong Kong team won two gold medals and six silver medals.

The 2nd IOM was held in Moscow, Russia, from September 4 to 9, with 277 students from 36 cities of 26 countries participating in the event. Hong Kong participated in the IOM for the first time.

The Hong Kong team members were selected from the best-performing contestants in this year's International Mathematical Olympiad, International Olympiad in Informatics, International Junior Science Olympiad and International Physics Olympiad.

The Hong Kong team won a First Place award under the Team Competition together with the host city team and the Shanghai team. Li Shing-yan (STFA Leung Kau Kui College) and Rahul Arya (King George V School) both won a gold medal in the physics competition. With the highest scores, Li was also awarded first place in the physics competition. In the chemistry competition, Wong Chi-fung and Chan Chak-fu (both from La Salle College) each won a silver medal. In the mathematics competition, Arvin Leung (Diocesan Boys' School) and Samuel Lee (CNEC Christian College) both won a silver medal. Wong Tsz-chun and Wong Yik-chun (both from Pui Ching Middle School) each attained a silver medal in the informatics competition. The Hong Kong team was also the Third Place Award winner in the Blitz contest.

The Secretary for Education, Mr Kevin Yeung, congratulated the Hong Kong team today (September 11) on their outstanding achievements in the competition. He said, "The achievements of the Hong Kong team in the competition demonstrated the great potential of Hong Kong students in the fields of science. The Education Bureau will continuously support more STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) related activities so as to enrich the learning experience of students and unleash their potential. The talents so nurtured will help enhance the quality of our manpower and the competitiveness of Hong Kong."

Other than arranging for the competition, the host city also organised various cultural activities for the contestants to broaden their horizons and learn more about the history and culture of the host city.

The success of the Hong Kong team in the IOM demonstrated the fruitful collaboration among different parties, including the Education Bureau and the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education as well as the tertiary institutions and professional bodies concerned, in nurturing gifted students in Hong Kong.
