Business forum held in Sydney to celebrate HKSAR's 20th anniversary (with photos)

     About 200 attendees from business and political sectors attended a business forum in Sydney, Australia, today (September 8) to receive updates on the latest developments and business opportunities in Hong Kong and Australia. 

     The Hong Kong 20: Developments and Opportunities Business Forum was jointly organised by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Sydney (HKETO) and the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

     In his welcoming remarks, the Director of the HKETO, Mr Arthur Au, said, "The forum seeks to connect business and political sectors on both sides and provide them with insights into the latest developments and business opportunities in the areas of innovation, trade and investment, and infrastructure."

     He added, "In 2016, the bilateral trade between Hong Kong and Australia was over A$15 billion, and bilateral investment exceeded A$150 billion. We hope that the attendees will capitalise on the business opportunities and set a new record in coming years."

     The Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Mr Nicholas W Yang, spoke at the forum to update the attendees on Hong Kong's developments and opportunities in the innovation and technology sector.

     Mr Yang highlighted the development of the 87-hectare Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park in the Lok Ma Chau Loop area, which would complement the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area.

     He encouraged more Australian companies to capitalise on the opportunities of the Loop, explore business opportunities in Hong Kong and tap the ever-expanding China market.

     Other speakers at the forum included the Australian Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science, Mr Arthur Sinodinos; the Assistant Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Mr Keith Pitt; the Minister for Urban Infrastructure, Mr Paul Fletcher; the Shadow Minister for Trade and Investment, Mr Jason Clare; and Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development, Mr Anthony Albanese.

     The Chairman of Far East Consortium International Limited, Mr David Chiu, and the Chief Executive Officer of the MTR Corporation Limited, Mr Lincoln Leong also spoke at the forum and joined the panel discussions.

     The business forum was the third major event in celebration of the HKSAR's 20th anniversary held in Sydney, following the Hong Kong Philharmonic's debut at the Sydney Opera House in May and a gala dinner in July.
