Cluster of respiratory syncytial virus cases in Tai Po Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Tai Po Hospital made the following announcement today (September 4):

     Ten patients (aged 55 to 91) and four staff members in a female psychiatric ward have presented with upper respiratory symptoms since August 24. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients and the test results for six were positive for Respiratory Syncytial Virus. The patients are being treated under isolation with stable condition. The staff members have recovered and resumed duty.

     Restricted visiting to and discharge from the ward concerned have been imposed. Infection control measures have been stepped up according to the established guidelines. All other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
