Junior Police Call Fight Crime Summer Camp (with photos)

     The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, and the Acting Secretary for Security, Mr Sonny Au, accompanied by the Acting Commissioner of Police, Mr Lau Yip-shing, officiated at the Launching Ceremony of the Junior Police Call (JPC) Fight Crime Summer Camp at Wu Kwai Sha Youth Village today (August 16).

     This year’s summer camp was one of the celebrating events of the 20th Anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Administrative Region. With the theme of “Youth leaders, Crime fighters. Abiding by the law, Respecting the others”, the event aimed to promote fight crime and anti-drug messages to JPC members.

     Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Sonny Au said that the JPC Scheme has been committed to fostering partnership between the JPC members and the community to combat crime and providing leadership training to the youth since its establishment in 1974. He hoped that this year’s summer camp could inspire the JPC members to become youngsters who respect others, adhere to the law, care for the community and are willing to take responsibility.

     After the ceremony, the officiating guests toured around the camp, visiting the virtual reality glasses workshop, followed by the game booths produced by JPC members of 21 districts. Apart from anti-drug and fight crime messages, element of the 20th Anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region was also incorporated in the activities. Wong Tai Sin District, Yau Tsim District and Central District were awarded the champion, first runner-up and second runner-up of the booth design competition respectively. For the recycling bag design competition, the champion, first runner-up and second runner up were Sha Tin District, Sau Mau Ping District and Tai Po District respectively.

     This year, World Wild Fund For Nature Hong Kong, the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Lung Fu Shan Environmental Education Centre of the University of Hong Kong and Environmental Protection Department, were invited to hold various environmental protection-related activities for the JPC members, including a candle-making workshop in which the JPC members was taught to reuse the “palm oil” pollutants collected from oil-clogged beaches to make candles.  

     In addition, a series of life planning activities were staged in the summer camp to facilitate the JPC members in exploring their future career development. They were given an opportunity to know more about the sports and aviation industries as Hong Kong Bowling Athlete, Mr Wu Siu-hong, former Hong Kong Basketball Team member, Mr Leung Kwok-shing, and representatives from an airline, were invited to be guest speakers at sharing sessions.

     Organised by the Police, the annual summer camp aims to enhance JPC members’ awareness of crimes and drug abuse as well as to promote positive values through various activities. Some 1,800 JPC members took part in this year’s summer camp held from August 15 to 18.
