*******************************************************************
The Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, met the visiting President of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, Mr Peter Thomson, at the Chief Executive's Office this morning (August 16). Mr Thomson is a strong advocate and supporter of the UN Ocean Conference and has been taking a leadership role in disseminating the outcomes of the Conference to stakeholders across the world.

Mrs Lam welcomed Mr Thomson's visit to Hong Kong. She assured him that Hong Kong is committed to the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable development. Over the years, Hong Kong has taken proactive actions to protect the marine environment and conserve important ecological habitats and species, as well as promote the sustainable use of fisheries resources in Hong Kong waters.

Noting that Mr Thomson had visited the Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park the other day, Mrs Lam pointed out that Hong Kong has designated five marine parks and one marine reserve to protect marine areas of high ecological value. Hong Kong also has a UNESCO Global Geopark that contributes to the conservation of natural and cultural heritage, including the marine environment.

Mrs Lam stressed that Hong Kong would continue its efforts in enhancing protection for marine habitats through expansion of statutory marine protected areas, reinforced habitat management and environmental monitoring, in addition to law enforcement, education and publicity.
