LCSD to present appreciation talks on sacred choral music composers
*******************************************************************
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department will present two appreciation talks entitled "Sounds of the Pioneers - Discover Palestrina and Poulenc" in September.

The talks will introduce two master composers in sacred choral music: Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and Francis Poulenc. Palestrina and Poulenc, who lived centuries apart and wrote in distinctive styles, were both deeply committed to the Catholic Church and suffered sad family losses and lived through turbulent times.

The talks, to be hosted in Cantonese by Patrick Chiu with live a cappella music by artists from the SingFest Choral Academy, will dissect Palestrina and Poulenc's music from historical, cultural and compositional points of view. The talks will be held at 7.30pm at CR2, Concert Hall Backstage, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Details are as follows:

Date: September 11 (Monday)
Topic: "Palestrina: Choral Music of 16th Century Italy"

Date: September 18 (Monday)
Topic: "Poulenc: Choral Music of 20th Century France"

Patrick Chiu has participated in various professional performances and received tuition from professors at the Vienna Conservatory during his period of residency in Vienna. Later he earned a scholarship to study at the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music, where he received his master's degree in choral conducting. He also worked with and studied under world-renowned maestros Helmuth Rilling, James Levine and Harry Christophers in Europe and the US. Chiu won two Gold Awards in the World Choir Games with the Hong Kong Melody Makers in 2010 and was a recipient of the Award for Young Artist in the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2012.
