World-class artists and ensembles to perform in "Great Music 2017" series

     From September to November, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will present an array of not-to-be-missed programmes by internationally acclaimed musicians and ensembles in the "Great Music 2017" series. Details are as follows:

"Encore Series: Violin Recital by Kyung Wha Chung"
Concert Hall, Hong Kong City Hall
September 17 (Sunday), 8pm
Tickets: $250 to $650

     Since her return to the stage after a hiatus in performing due to a hand injury, Kyung Wha Chung has graced concert halls and received critical acclaim with events that are often sold out and highly anticipated. In this long-awaited Hong Kong recital, Chung will perform Debussy's "Sonata in G Minor" and the youthful and passionate first sonata by Fauré, which is the composer's claim to fame, as well as Brahms' "Scherzo in C Minor" and his final sonata, "Sonata No. 3 in D Minor".

"Encore Series: Piano Recital by Daniil Trifonov"
Concert Hall, Hong Kong Cultural Centre
September 26 (Tuesday), 8pm
Tickets: $200 to $420

     Since his triumph in the final of the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 2011, Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov has captivated the music world with his unique blend of powerful intensity and dexterity. His Hong Kong debut will see him perform a piece by his dearly loved Chopin and works of Schumann, Grieg, Barber, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Mompou inspired by Chopin.

"The Sixteen"

     The Sixteen is internationally honoured as one of the most distinguished choirs in the world. Led by Harry Christophers, the founder and conductor, the Sixteen will return to Hong Kong with jewels by two masters in sacred choral music - Palestrina, whose works of immaculate polyphonic and textual clarity marked the highest achievement of Renaissance music, and Poulenc, a composer of colourful yet deeply reflectional work from 20th century France.

"Encore Series: Piano Recital by Rafał Blechacz"

October 12 (Thursday), 8pm
Tickets: $160 to $340

     Polish pianist Rafał Blechacz won the top prize as well as awards for the best performance of mazurka, polonaise, sonata and concerto in the prestigious 15th International Chopin Piano Competition in 2005. He is the only pianist who has won the five awards in one go. Since then, Blechacz has performed in many venues to great acclaim, firmly establishing himself as a world-renowned pianist. The programme in this Hong Kong recital includes works by Bach, Beethoven and Chopin.

"Berliner Philharmoniker"

November 11 (Saturday), 5pm

     The illustrious Berliner Philharmoniker will perform in Hong Kong for two concerts under the leadership of Sir Simon Rattle. The orchestra will perform monumental symphonic works by Richard Strauss, Brahms, Stravinsky and Rachmaninov. Lang Lang will perform Bartók's energetic "Piano Concerto No. 2" in the first concert, while in the second show the orchestra will perform a work composed by eminent Korean composer Unsuk Chin. There will also be free live relays at the Piazza of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Sha Tin Park and the Auditorium of the Yuen Long Theatre.

"Encore Series: Philharmonia Quartett Berlin"

November 19 (Sunday), 8pm
Tickets: $160 to $340

     Established in 1985 by the concertmaster and second violin section leader of the Berliner Philharmoniker, Philharmonia Quartett Berlin has been known as "four of the best" since its debut in London's Wigmore Hall. The quartet will play Mozart's "String Quartet No. 8 in F", Beethoven's "String Quartet No. 15 in A Minor" and Schumann's "String Quartet No. 3 in A".
