Clusters of infectious disease cases in New Territories West Cluster

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for New Territories West Cluster made the following announcement today (August 9):
 
     Sixteen patients (aged 38 to 68) and a staff member in a male adult psychiatric ward in Castle Peak Hospital had presented with respiratory symptoms since August 3. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients and the test results for 15 patients were positive for Influenza A. The patients are being treated under isolation with stable condition. The staff member is currently on sick leave.
 
     In addition, Siu Lam Hospital had earlier announced a cluster of patients in a female ward for severe intellectual disability being infected with Respiratory Syncytial Virus. The hospital said that three more patients (aged 26 to 39) in the ward had presented with respiratory symptoms. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients and their test results were positive for Respiratory Syncytial Virus. The patients are being treated under isolation with stable condition.
 
     Admission to the wards concerned in the two hospitals has been suspended and restricted visiting has been imposed. Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. Other patients in the wards are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
