TAC briefed on progress of road maintenance and review of road works safety requirements

The following is issued on behalf of the Transport Advisory Committee:
 
     Members of the Transport Advisory Committee (TAC) were briefed today (July 27) on the Government's latest progress of road maintenance and the review of road works safety requirements.
      
     The Government introduced to the TAC two recently adopted road maintenance methods, namely use of better deformation-resistant bituminous materials and rapid-hardening concrete in repairing bituminous and rigid road pavements respectively. The Government's efforts in enhancing road maintenance reflect a commitment to maintaining a quality, safe and reliable road network.
      
     The TAC Chairman, Mr Larry Kwok, said, "Members welcome the Government's work on improving road maintenance methods continuously in order to enhance riding quality of the road network.
      
     In addition, Members noted that the Government gazetted the revised Code of Practice for the Lighting, Signing and Guarding of Road Works on June 16, 2017, in accordance with the Road Traffic Ordinance (Cap. 374). The revised Code will take effect from January 1, 2018, to improve the safety protection measures for road works. The Government is also considering relevant legislative amendment to further enhance the regulation of the traffic control and guarding measures implemented in road works.
      
     "The Committee welcomes the Government's work on improving road works safety continuously in order to enhance safety protection for road works workers," Mr Kwok added.
