LegCo Panel on Commerce and Industry meets with Israeli Government officials (with photos)

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

     The delegation of the Legislative Council Panel on Commerce and Industry continued the duty visit in Israel today (July 26, Israel time) and met with the officials of two ministries of the Israeli Government.
 
     The delegation first received a briefing from Director of Political-Economic Research & Analysis, Center for Policy Research of the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Shahar Shelef, on the foreign policy of the Israeli Government in the Middle East and the major duties of the Center. The Center provides an independent research analysis for policy makers particularly in foreign affairs.
 
     Delegation members then met with Trade Commissioner of the Foreign Trade Administration of the Israel Ministry of Economy and Industry, Mr Ohad Cohen, to obtain first-hand information on the Israeli Government's policies to promote international trade and commerce. During the meeting, Mr Cohen briefed the delegation on how different units and divisions of the Ministry assist in the development of different industries and trade as well as the promotion of international economic activities.
 
     On the third day of its duty visit yesterday (July 25, Israel time), the delegation visited the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and its technology transfer company - Yissum Research Development Company (Yissum). Members were briefed by
Development Associate Director of Yissum, Mr Matt Zarek, on the technology transfer process and the role of Yissum in making the research output of the university's researchers and students available for commercial applications. Delegation members further learned the strategies of Yissum to commercialise technology outcomes and facilitate a long-term academia-industry research collaboration.
 
     Before visiting Yissum, the delegation paid a visit to Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, during which Members gained a deeper understanding of the historical background of Israel.
 
     The delegation will visit a leading provider of high technology library automation solutions this afternoon, followed by a visit to a technology transfer company affiliated with the Tel Aviv University tomorrow (July 27, Israel time) morning.
