SCS visits Eastern District to better understand community needs (with photos)

The Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Joshua Law, today (July 24) visited Eastern District to get an update on local developments and the needs of the community, as well as conducting home visits under the "Celebrations for All" project.
Accompanied by the Chairman of Eastern District Council, Mr Wong Kin-pan, and the Acting District Officer (Eastern), Miss Angora Ngai, Mr Law first visited an elderly couple and an ethnic minority family in North Point. Mr Law chatted with them to learn about their daily life and gave them gift packs to share the joy of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

Mr Law then went to the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Chai Wan) where he toured the STEM Education Centre and the Asian Training Restaurant and Training Kitchen. He chatted with the students and was interested to learn how they acquire their professional skills through practical training in a simulated working environment.

Afterwards, Mr Law received a briefing on the Ming Wah Dai Ha redevelopment project on A Kung Ngam Road in Shau Kei Wan. He was pleased to hear that there will be more community facilities such as an elderly activity centre and elderly homes in the district upon completion of the project.

Mr Law said, "Eastern District is the first community I have visited since taking up the post of Secretary for the Civil Service. Today I had the opportunity to chat with kaifongs and to learn how an ethnic minority family takes root in Hong Kong. I was also able to find out more about community needs through District Council members.

"I am sure district visits will enable me to gain a good grasp of public sentiment. To keep in touch with the community, I will also visit other districts in future."

The "Celebrations for All" project is one of the major events to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR. It is co-ordinated by the Home Affairs Department and implemented by non-governmental organisations in the 18 districts.
