The Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, today (July 23) expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Mr Lau Wong-fat.

     Mr Lau held various key positions in public offices before and after the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), which included member of the Executive Council, member of the Legislative Council, chairman of Heung Yee Kuk, chairman of the Tuen Mun District Council, and chairman of the Tuen Mun Rural Committee. Mr Lau made valuable contribution to Hong Kong and was awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal in 2005.

     "I was grieved to learn of the passing of Mr Lau Wong-fat. I worked closely with him over the years, especially when I served as the Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, Secretary for Development and the Chief Secretary for Administration. I often needed to consult him on affairs of the New Territories, collaborated with him in rural developments and in the improvement of the livelihood of rural residents. Mr Lau dedicated his life to the New Territories, led Heung Yee Kuk for a long period of time and was revered by rural residents. He loved Hong Kong and our country, making tremendous contributions in Hong Kong's return to the motherland and the successful implementation of the "one country, two systems". In his time as member of the Executive Council and the Legislative Council, he tendered valuable advice to the Government for the development of Hong Kong.  He took concrete actions in assisting the Government in tackling problems associated with the development of the New Territories by settling disputes and finding win-win solutions for all. His passing is a great loss to the Hong Kong community. On behalf of the HKSAR Government, I extend my deepest condolences to his family" said Mrs Lam.
     
     "Uncle Lau, you will be sorely missed, always."
