Summer Reading Month 2017 encourages parent-child reading (with photos)
***********************************************************************
The large-scale family reading programme Summer Reading Month 2017, which is organised by the Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, was launched today (July 22). In addition to a thematic exhibition for children entitled "A Tour of Chinese Culture", an array of interesting parent-child activities are also being held to promote family reading.

The launch ceremony was held today at Hong Kong Central Library, where the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Michelle Li, signed the Reading Charter with other guests. Speaking at the ceremony, Ms Li encouraged readers to establish a regular reading habit by making good use of the wide variety of e-Books and e-Databases in the public libraries during summer. She also invited parents and children to join various activities during Summer Reading Month 2017, which offers the prospect of a joyous summer of family reading.

The thematic exhibition "A Tour of Chinese Culture" introduces Chinese scripts and their related cultural history, which are among the most ancient writing systems, as well as primitive writing and classical writing. It also features 10 items of the national intangible cultural heritage of the Mainland and Hong Kong including the art of paper crafting, cutting and carving. A reading zone displaying a selection of children's books and e-resources is also set up for visitors. The exhibition runs until August 20.

Parents and children are also invited to participate in "Contests on Dramatisation - Knowing Chinese Idioms", through which they can present a Chinese idiom-related story along with storytelling and dramatisation, enabling children to understand the origins of different Chinese idioms.

Cultural performances are also available in Summer Reading Month, including a children's Cantonese opera performance, a mask-changing and acrobatics show, puppet shows, a Western wind music performance and a dance performance, offering great entertainment for families. An array of activities including talks, book exhibitions and workshops are also being held at various public libraries.

The Reading Charter is an activity held by the HKPL during summer to promote reading through voluntary pledges. It aims to encourage readers, in particular students from kindergarten to secondary 6, to establish a good reading habit by setting their own reading goals. Every participant will receive a souvenir.

Summer Reading Month 2017, one of the activities celebrating the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, is being held from July 22 to August 20. All activities are free of charge. Seat reservations or admission tickets are required for some of the programmes. Details can be found in the Summer Reading Month booklet available at all public libraries and www.hkpl.gov.hk/srm. For enquiries, please call 2921 2660.
