Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region - Opening Carnival of the Wong Tai Sin Square was held at Wong Tai Sin Square today (July 10), marking the completion and commissioning of the "Expansion and Improvement of Wong Tai Sin Square" project under the Signature Project Scheme.

The "Expansion and Improvement of Wong Tai Sin Square" project was one of the two projects taken forward under the Wong Tai Sin Signature Project Scheme. Under the Signature Project Scheme, a provision of $100 million has been earmarked for each District Council to implement signature projects selected by the District Council, so as to better address local needs. This project has expanded Wong Tai Sin Square northwards by 15 metres and has increased its area by 40 per cent. A permanent stage has been installed, with a shelter covering it and another covering the spectator area. With its convenient location, the expanded and improved Wong Tai Sin Square will become a landmark of the district, and will become an ideal venue in the district to organise outdoor cultural and recreational activities.

Officiating at the commemorative plaque unveiling ceremony, the Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, said the whole works project involved a host of procedures, including planning, design, application and funding approval, as well as commencement, construction and completion of the project. Thanks to the united efforts of the Wong Tai Sin District Council (WTSDC), the Wong Tai Sin District Office and members of the local community during the process, the project was completed smoothly.

Mrs Lam said that this term of Government will work interactively, including interacting with District Council members and the local community. She and the Principal Officials will pay district visits regularly and exchange views with District Council members and the local community, so as to have a better grasp of district affairs and public sentiments to respond to aspirations of the community and promote community development.

Apart from "Expansion and Improvement of Wong Tai Sin Square", the other signature project in Wong Tai Sin District is "Enhancement of Leisure Facilities of Morse Park".

Other officiating guests included the Chairman of the WTSDC, Mr Li Tak-hong; the Chairman of "Energizing Wong Tai Sin" - Working Group on Signature Project Scheme under the WTSDC, Mr Kan Chi-ho; the District Officer (Wong Tai Sin), Ms Annie Kong; and the Vice Chairman of the WTSDC, Mr Joe Lai.
