**********************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson for United Christian Hospital (UCH) today (July 4) issued the following statement in response to the findings and recommendations of the Root Cause Analysis Report of a Serious Untoward Event:

A 43-year-old female patient was diagnosed with Immunoglobulin A Nephropathy last year. She was followed up in the renal Specialist Outpatient Clinic of UCH earlier this year and high-dose steroid therapy was started without concurrent prescription of antiviral medication. The patient later developed acute hepatitis and progressive liver function deterioration and was transferred to Queen Mary Hospital for liver transplant in April.

Following the announcement of the incident, the Hospital Authority (HA) Head Office (HAHO) appointed a Root Cause Analysis panel to investigate the clinical management and communication process of the incident. The investigation report has recently been completed and submitted to the HAHO.

UCH has accepted the investigation findings and recommendations. Follow-up actions will be taken to implement the recommendations to prevent recurrence of similar incidents in future. The hospital will continue to communicate with the family and offer appropriate assistance. UCH expressed its solemn apology and deepest sympathy to the patient and her family.

The hospital also expressed gratitude for the work of the Co-Chairmen and members of the Root Cause Analysis panel. Membership of the panel is as follows:
