A large-scale cultural programme entitled "Genesis and Spirit: A Showcase of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Zhejiang" had its opening ceremony today (June 6) at the Exhibition Gallery of Hong Kong Central Library. Programme highlights include an exhibition and dance performances.

The programme is presented by the Ministry of Culture and the Home Affairs Bureau, organised by the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), and held in association with Hong Kong United Arts Entertainment Company Limited.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, said that the "Genesis and Spirit" series is an important co-operation initiative of the Ministry of Culture and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government for the sake of preserving intangible cultural heritage (ICH). The series has invited provinces namely Sichuan, Guizhou and Gansu to showcase their ICH items in order to give an overview of the nation's efforts in preserving ICH in the past few years.

"Genesis and Spirit: Recalling Jiangnan - An Exhibition on the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Zhejiang", one of the highlight programmes of this cultural event, is running from now until June 19 at the Exhibition Gallery of Hong Kong Central Library. A total of 58 ICH items of Zhejiang on the Representative List of UNESCO and lists at the national, provincial and municipal levels are being vividly showcased through exhibits, bearer demonstrations, operatic singing performances and thematic talks. The five themes of the exhibition, namely "Sitting Room", "Study Room", "Bedroom", "Kitchen" and "Back Garden", recreate past scenes of daily life of the people in the Jiangnan region. Visitors are not only able to experience the diverse performing arts and exquisite handicrafts of Zhejiang, but also explore the wisdom of Chinese culture.

To tie in with the exhibition, three free thematic talks (to be conducted in Putonghua) will be held at 4.15pm on June 10 and 2pm on June 11 and 17 at the "Back Garden" exhibition area. Entitled "Chinese Embroidery Techniques, Traditions and Heritage", "Vocal Styles of Song Art of Zhejiang Inspired by the Scenic Landscape" and "Grand Red Trousseaux - A Talk on the Wedding and Bridal Traditions of Ningbo and Shaoxing in Zhejiang", the talks aim to enhance public's understanding of ICH in Zhejiang. A maximum of 40 seats will be available for each session on a first-come, first-served basis. For details of the exhibition and talks, please visit the website of the ICH Office at www.lcsd.gov.hk/CE/Museum/ICHO/en_US/web/icho/exhibitions_activities_21.html.
