Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra performs in Beijing to celebrate 20th anniversary of HKSAR (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (HKCO) staged a Chinese music concert, "Jing · Qi · Shen", at the Beijing Concert Hall tonight (June 3). This was part of the series of events to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

The Director of the Office of the Government of the HKSAR in Beijing (BJO), Ms Gracie Foo, attended the concert and said that to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the HKSAR, the BJO, together with the Liaoning Liaison Unit and the Tianjin Liaison Unit, is organising a wide array of events from April to October, including exhibitions and cultural performances, to share the joy of the 20th anniversary with the local communities.

Ms Foo said that the HKCO performance in Beijing was one of the celebratory cultural events supported by the BJO. The HKCO is the only professional, full-sized Chinese orchestra in Hong Kong and has frequently been invited to perform in different places around the world. The HKCO prides itself on its roots in traditional Chinese culture and its endeavours to explore new frontiers in Chinese ethnic music. The Beijing performance aimed to be a cultural and musical treat for the local audience.

In late April, the BJO, in collaboration with the Beijing offices of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the Hong Kong Tourism Board, launched a 20th Anniversary Events Platform in Beijing to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the HKSAR. A dedicated website entitled ''Let's Celebrate in Beijing'' (www.bjo.gov.hk/hksar20) has been set up to disseminate information on the major celebration activities organised by the BJO, Hong Kong people, Hong Kong enterprises and Hong Kong students in Beijing. The HKCO's performance in Beijing was one of the celebration events featured on this platform.

Founded in 1977, the HKCO is rooted in the Chinese cultural heritage. It has built up a repertoire that covers not only traditional Chinese music but also contemporary works. The HKCO has also commissioned over 2 300 new music compositions and arrangements in a wide range of styles and genres. Beijing is one of the stops of the HKCO's Mainland music tour. It will also perform in other cities including Tianjin, Shenyang, Shanghai, Wuhan and Chengdu.
