*************************************************************************************
The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah; the Director General of the Department of Culture of Guangdong Province, Mr Fang Jianhong; and the President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR), Mr Leung Hio-ming, attended the 18th Greater Pearl River Delta Cultural Co-operation Meeting held in Foshan, Guangdong Province, today (June 2). About 100 delegates including officials and representatives of relevant arts and cultural authorities and organisations from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau also joined the meeting.

In his concluding remarks, Mr Lau said that the meeting had agreed to implement various initiatives. Among them, the three places will work together to promote the Belt and Road Initiative through cultural exchanges, actively promote Chinese culture to the world and showcase the cultural achievements of the three places. In addition, the three places will continue to collaborate and launch more performances and exhibitions together, as well as train professionals so as to provide the citizens of Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macau with cultural experience of greater diversity. Mr Lau also said that people-to-people bonds could be achieved through art and culture and the 10th Asia Cultural Co-operation Forum will be held at the end of this year to strengthen the connections.

During the meeting this morning, the three places signed a tripartite memorandum of intention on promotion of cultural exchanges under the Belt and Road Initiative. They agreed to enhance communication and discussion, and to promote cultural exchanges and co-operation with Belt and Road countries and regions. They also discussed and concluded a memorandum of intention on youth cultural exchange to strengthen the tripartite co-operation on this front.

The three places have progressed on co-operation in various areas. On performing arts, following on from the successful staging of the “Cantonese Music Assembly” Cross-Disciplines Guangdong Music Concert earlier this year, the three places are planning a Cantonese music tour in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau which will bring together new generation of musicians from the three places. Exchanges among performing arts groups from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau have become increasingly frequent, and some of them have led to the start of in-depth co-operation projects since last year to enhance performing arts and training networks, build up international brands of culture, and facilitate more productions of the three places to be staged outside China.

On co-operation among museums, the three places will continue to organise various large-scale arts and cultural exhibitions to promote signature artworks. On training of arts and cultural talents, on-going efforts will be made to organise thematic studies and training with a view to raising the standard of public services and levels of professionalism. In the coming year, the three places will continue to strengthen co-operation in the areas of public libraries, intangible cultural heritage, and cultural and creative industries for the further development of relevant services and the cultural sector.

The Department of Culture of Guangdong Province, the Home Affairs Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR and the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macau SAR have established a cultural framework within the Greater Pearl River Delta region. An agreement on cultural co-operation among Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau was signed in August 2003 and five working groups have been set up to implement and follow up on the recommendations for co-operation in different areas.

The sessions of the five working groups were held yesterday afternoon (June 1) to discuss specific topics, namely exchanges for performing artists and co-organisation of cultural programmes, co-operation in public libraries and cultural information, co-operation in museum services, intangible cultural heritage, and co-operation of cultural and creative industries.
