Exhibition of Jao Tsung-i's art to showcase Dunhuang's splendours (with photos)

     The Hong Kong Heritage Museum will hold the exhibition "Splendours of Dunhuang: Jao Tsung-i's Selected Academic and Art Works Inspired by Dunhuang Culture" from tomorrow (May 24) to September 18. The exhibition will display the great master of Chinese studies Professor Jao Tsung-i's publications and artworks inspired by the scrolls, murals and artefacts discovered in Dunhuang, enabling visitors to learn about his scholarly and artistic achievements, and to appreciate how he reveals the unique charm of Dunhuang culture.

     In addition to being an erudite and respectful scholar in both research and fine arts, Professor Jao also has made great achievements in Dunhuang studies. He has studied Dunhuang's archaeological finds unearthed since the 1950s. He also went to Paris and London to look into ancient Dunhuang paintings and manuscripts, and published books on Dunhuang studies. He has made significant contributions to the promotion of research and cultural conservation on Dunhuang.

     The exhibition will feature 115 sets of Professor Jao's publications and artworks inspired by Dunhuang's ancient manuscripts and relics. Highlight exhibits include "Five-character Couplet in Dunhuang Sutra Scroll Style", "Self Poem in Cursive Script" and the paintings "Flying Apsaras", "Holding the Lotus", "Avalokitesvara under the Tree", "Scenery of Dunhuang" and "Phoenix".

     An opening ceremony was held today (May 23). Officiating guests included Professor Jao Tsung-i; the Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung, and his wife, Mrs Regina Leung; Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Mr Yang Jian; the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah; the Director of the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole, the University of Hong Kong, Professor Lee Chack-fan; the Deputy Director of the Dunhuang Academy, Dr Zhao Shengliang; the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Michelle Li; the Founding Presidents of the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole Fan Club, Dr Simon Suen; and the Presidents of the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole Fan Club.

     The exhibition is one of the events celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. It is jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the University of Hong Kong, and jointly organised by the Hong Kong Heritage Museum and the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole of the University of Hong Kong. The Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole Fan Club, the Jao Studies Foundation, the Jao Link, the Jao Tsung-I Academy and the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology of the Hong Kong Baptist University are the supporting organisations.
