Statistics Advisory Board discusses developments of official statistics work

     The Statistics Advisory Board held a meeting today (May 11) to discuss official statistics work and its recent developments.

     At the meeting, members discussed the plan for disseminating the findings of the study on household income distribution in Hong Kong based on the data of the 2016 Population By-census and earlier rounds of population census/by-census as well as various administrative sources. The findings of the study are scheduled for release in mid-2017.

     Members were also briefed on the latest development of trade statistics, including the adoption of the change of ownership principle in compiling trade statistics under the framework of National Accounts in Hong Kong as well as the concept of Trade in Value-Added developed by international organisations.

     The Commissioner for Census and Statistics and Chairman of the Statistics Advisory Board, Mr Leslie Tang, said, "The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) has been making continuous efforts to enhance the trade statistics system to reflect the latest phenomenon of international trade and to serve the changing analytical needs of data users."

     The Board noted the major statistical developments depicted in the 2017 Edition of An Outline of Statistical Development which was published on April 25, 2017.

     The Statistics Advisory Board is a non-statutory advisory body which advises the Commissioner for Census and Statistics on matters pertaining to government statistical work. Its membership consists of established professionals of the business sector, academia and the community, which provides for a wide representation to assist the Commissioner in integrating views of data users, data suppliers and statisticians.
