     Stratagems in Architecture - "The Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition" Hong Kong Response Exhibition is now open and will run until May 30 at Oi! in North Point. The exhibition has brought the works by a group of talented Hong Kong young architects and artists showcased at the Venice Biennale back to the community for viewing. The exhibition aims to enhance public understanding of local and global innovative designs, and encourage public communication and engagement.
 
     The opening ceremony was held today (May 4). Officiating guests include the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So; the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Michelle Li; the Acting Head of Create Hong Kong, Ms Fiona Lam; the Chairman of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects Biennale Foundation, Mr William Tseng; the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Ms Winsome Chow; and the President of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, Mr Marvin Chen.
 
     Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr So said that the Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition is a major event in the architecture industry, showcasing outstanding works of architects from all over the world and facilitating architectural cultural interaction. It is also regarded as the "hall of fame" for contemporary architectural art, he said. Having participated in this exhibition last year in Venice, Hong Kong has shown its unique architectural features to the world, said Mr So. He added that as this year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Hong Kong Response Exhibition is currently being held to further promote Hong Kong's creativity and achievements in the architectural sector.
 
     The theme of this year’s Hong Kong Response Exhibition's is "Stratagems in Architecture". The curatorial team merged architecture with the wisdom of ancient Chinese military strategies (the "36 Stratagems") to create 13 exhibits, showing how Hong Kong's young architects and artists produce breakthrough designs through innovative architectural thinking and the application of artistic qualities, in turn showing the "can do" spirit of Hong Kong - the city's ability to overcome difficulties. The curatorial team tried to push the boundaries, breaking norms and standards to release infinite vitality and imagination. The designs reflect their flexible mindset. For example, an exhibit entitled "Confessional" transforms towering stacks of metal bunk beds into a pristine new form. The pure white exterior, which is constructed of wax bricks, creates a tranquil space in the midst of Hong Kong's "concrete jungle".
 
     During the exhibition period, a series of "Space, life, exploration" workshops will be held every weekend, at which architects and artists will reflect on and explore Hong Kong's architecture with visitors. The workshop is free of charge.
 
     The exhibition is one of the events celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Co-organised by Oi!, the Hong Kong Institute of Architects Biennale Foundation and the Hong Kong Art Development Council, the exhibition is organised with the Hong Kong Institute of Architects as a partner and sponsored by Create Hong Kong.
