******************************************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Environmental Campaign Committee:

The Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC) held the "Lamma Island as a Green Community" Green Fun Day at Yung Shue Wan Plaza, Lamma Island today (April 29) to raise the environmental awareness of residents and visitors and to encourage efforts to jointly build a green community.

Officiating at the event were the Vice-chairman of the ECC, Mr Hui Yung-chung; the Chairperson of the Environmental Education and Community Action Projects Vetting Sub-committee, Dr Winnie Law; the Chairman of Lamma Island (North) Rural Committee, Mr Chan Lin-wai; Assistant District Officer (Islands), Miss Belinda Chong; Islands District Council member Ms Yu Lai-fan and representatives of the supporting organisations, namely the Hongkong Electric Company, Limited and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Kindergarten.

Addressing the event, Mr Hui said that since the launch of the pilot campaign "Lamma Island as a Green Community" in November 2016, the ECC has made dedicated efforts to enhance and refurbish existing waste recycling facilities on the island, organise publicity and educational activities and encourage various stakeholders in the community to participate in dedicated environmental campaign programmes. By stepping up the promotion of key messages of waste reduction at source, clean recycling, energy saving and the protection of the natural environment, the ECC aims to develop a greener and more sustainable Lamma Island.

At the event today, a number of upcycling workshops and game booths were set up to promote the keynote message of "Use Less, Waste Less" in an interactive manner. Display panels were also erected to share "Big Waster's 36 Tips to Go Low Carbon". In addition, Ground and Round Theatre was invited to perform an interactive drama "Clean HK! Clean!", which is supported by the Environment and Conservation Fund, to spread messages of waste reduction at source and clean recycling.

In addition, in collaboration with Green Hong Kong Green, the ECC organised the eco-heritage-tour "Wonders of Wind Energy" at the event, leading participants on a tour of villages on the island including information about the ecological environment and a visit to Hong Kong’s first commercial-scale wind power station, "Lamma Winds".

Under this pilot programme, the ECC organised a slogan competition under the theme "Lamma Island as a Green Community" for primary students of Northern Lamma School to encourage them to care for the environment. Awards were presented at the event and the outstanding entries will be used on signages along the family trail on Lamma Island to remind visitors to protect nature and practise "leave no trace".

Founded in 1990, the ECC aims to enhance public participation to protect the environment. The ECC has organised many environmental events and activities for different sectors of the community, including the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence, the Hong Kong Green School Award, the Student Environmental Protection Ambassador Scheme and the World Environment Day publicity event. Information on the ECCs programmes and activities is available at www.ecc.org.hk.
