Research Grants Council to present public lecture on cyber security on May 7
****************************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the University Grants Committee:

The Research Grants Council (RGC) will present its first public lecture this year under the theme "Cyber Security" on May 7 (Sunday) at the Hong Kong Science Museum.

The RGC has invited Associate Professor of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Hong Kong, Dr Lucas Hui, and Assistant Professor of the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Dr Hu Haibo, to share their research findings and knowledge with the public. Details are as follows:

Time: 2.30pm to 4.30pm
Venue: Lecture Hall, Hong Kong Science Museum
Language: Cantonese
Admission is free on a first-come, first-served basis.

In the foreseeable future, the Internet of Things (IoT) devices will be in wider use. Huge amounts of data will be generated, stored and transmitted in the process. Security breaches in the IoT will pose a significant problem. Dr Hui will deliver a talk on "Cyber Security issues in Internet of Things" to raise public awareness. He will use examples to illustrate the security problems and potential solutions related to the IoT.

Location-based services have a growing necessity to guard against location cheating by ensuring location trustworthiness. Some online businesses and emergency services require verification of users' geographic location. Such a requirement generates a new problem named "spatio-temporal attestation". Dr Hu will give a lecture titled "Beware of Your Location Privacy and Integrity in Social Networks" to introduce novel solutions to "spatio-temporal attestation" while retaining location privacy.

Since 2009, the RGC has invited leading scholars to deliver public lectures. These lectures aim to arouse public interest in local research developments. For enquiries, please call 2524 3987 or visit the University Grants Committee webpage (www.ugc.edu.hk/eng/rgc/lectures/lectures.html).
