At the invitation of the Chief Justice of the Court of Final Appeal, Mr Geoffrey Ma Tao-li, the Legislative Council (LegCo) Panel on Administration of Justice and Legal Services today (April 21) visited the West Kowloon Law Courts Building (WKLCB) in Sham Shui Po and met with members of the Judiciary.

Led by the Chief Justice and the Chief Judge of the High Court, Mr Justice Andrew Cheung, Members toured the courtroom facilities and the Information Centre which serves to provide services to potential litigants of the Small Claims Tribunal in the WKLCB.  Members learnt that the Small Claims Tribunal, the Coroner's Court and the Obscene Articles Tribunal are housed in the WKLCB; and that the commencement of operation of the WKLCB has enabled the Judiciary to meet the increasing demand for court services and enhance the operational efficiency of the courts.

They included the protection of vulnerable witnesses; recruitment difficulty of High Court judges; heavy caseload of judges; pay and conditions of services for judges and judicial officers; review of retirement age of judges; measures to attract practicing lawyers to join the bench; and quality control of interpretation service at hearings.
