Territory-wide safe cycling operation concludes
***********************************************

Police conducted a territory-wide operation between April 9 and 17 to raise public awareness of safe cycling through stringent enforcement action.

During the operation, the Police used enforcement action to target cycling offences such as failing to comply with traffic signs or signals, cycling on footways for pedestrians and walking on cycle tracks. This resulted in the issue of 58 verbal warnings and 1,292 summonses.

According to Police figures, there were 467 traffic accidents involving bicycles between January and March, resulting in 481 casualties with six fatalities. The numbers of traffic accidents that occurred on cycle tracks and carriageways are 172 and 220 respectively, causing 178 and 227 casualties.

The Police reminded members of the public that traffic accidents can be fatal and cyclists should comply with Road Traffic Ordinance. Offenders committing cycling offences will be prosecuted.
