Cluster of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus cases in Queen Elizabeth Hospital
****************************************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) made the following announcement today (April 7):

A 14-day-old baby boy in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of QEH was confirmed to be a carrier of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) on March 29. In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has screened patients who had contact with the index patient. Two more babies (one male and one female, aged two days and 12 days) who had stayed in the same ward were confirmed as MRSA carriers without clinical symptoms. Of these three babies, two are still being hospitalised for underlying medical conditions and are under medical surveillance and isolation. The remaining baby has been discharged.

Infection control measures at the ward concerned have already been stepped up according to prevailing guidelines. All other patients in the ward are under close medical surveillance.

The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.
