LCSD to hold talk on "The Stories behind the Collections" (with photos)
***********************************************************************
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will hold a talk entitled "The Stories behind the Collections" on April 15 (Saturday) given by speakers from the Palace Museum, namely research fellow of the Department of Paintings and Calligraphy, Ms Li Shi; associate research fellow of the Department of Paintings and Calligraphy, Ms Tian Yimin; and the Director of the Department of Objects and Decorative Arts, Mr Lyu Chenglong.

This is the second talk in the Palace Museum Academy series presented by the LCSD and organised by the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, in which the speakers introduce special items from the collections of the Palace Museum and share the fascinating stories behind them.

Themed "Emperor Qianlong's Misjudgment - the Vicissitude Story of Huang Gongwang's 'Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains'", Ms Li will share the story of this painting by Huang Gongwang, a renowned landscape painter of the Yuan dynasty. The painting captures 600 years of ravages and fire and the misjudgments of Emperor Qianlong. It is considered to be Huang's greatest achievement.

Ms Tian will talk about the "Night Revels of Han Xizai", a unique masterpiece among the narrative drawings of ancient China, explaining its creation, collection and artistic value, along with related research findings by Palace Museum experts over the years.

The Palace Museum has a collection of about 360 000 ceramics from different dynasties in China. Mr Lu will share some interesting stories about his favourite ones, including a sky blue glazed three-feet zun (cup) made in Ru Yao in the North Song period; a press-hand cup with a design of interlocking lotuses in blue and white from the Yongle Reign; a Ming Dynasty, blue and white covered jar with design of cakra and Sanskrit from the Xuande Reign; and a Ming Dynasty bowl with an enamel decoration of chicken and peony flowers from the Yongzheng Reign, Qing Dynasty.

The talk will be held at the Theatre of the Hong Kong Heritage Museum from 2.30pm to 5.30pm. It will be conducted in Putonghua (Cantonese simultaneous interpretation service available) with free admission. Interested parties can reserve seats through www.museums.gov.hk/pmtalk2 or call 3749 9878 during office hours. There is a maximum of two seats per reservation, and seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The "Palace Museum Academy" talk series, which comprises four talks, is one of the events under the "In Touch with Palace Museum" campaign being presented by the LCSD from the end of 2016 to July 2017. Through a series of exhibitions, events and educational activities, the campaign highlights the essence of traditional Chinese culture and its modern connotations, as well as the role and contribution of Hong Kong and the Palace Museum in the inheritance of Chinese culture. It leads the public to discover that far from being anachronistic or outmoded, traditional culture still holds a wealth of wisdom for their daily lives.
