Judicial appointment

The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary:

     The Judiciary today (March 14) announced the appointment of Ms Lisa Wong Kwok-ying, SC, as Judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court. The appointment will take effect from March 15, 2017.

     The appointment is made by the Chief Executive on the recommendation of the Judicial Officers Recommendation Commission.

     Ms Wong, SC, who now holds office as Recorder of the Court of First Instance of the High Court, will cease to be Recorder with effect from the same date (March 15).

     The biographical note of Ms Wong, SC, is as follows:

     Ms Lisa Wong Kwok-ying, SC, was born in Hong Kong in 1964. She obtained LL.B. and P.C.LL. from the University of Hong Kong in 1986 and 1987 respectively. She further acquired LL.M. from the London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London, in the United Kingdom in 1988. She was called to the Bar in Hong Kong in 1988 and was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor in Singapore in 1995. She has been in private practice since 1989. She was appointed as Senior Counsel in 2006. She sat as Temporary Deputy Registrar, High Court, for periods in 2002 and 2003. She served as Deputy Judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court for periods in 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2013. She has been appointed as Recorder of the Court of First Instance of the High Court since 2013.

     The appointment of Judges of the Court of First Instance of the High Court is now complete for this year. Three appointments have been made. The appointments of Madam Justice D'Almada Remedios and Mr Justice Wilson Chan took effect on January 4, 2017. Ms Lisa Wong Kwok-ying, SC, will be appointed on March 15, 2017.
