Hong Kong artist holds exhibition in Düsseldorf (with photos)
*************************************************************
The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Berlin (HKETO Berlin) recently supported Hong Kong artist Samson Young in staging his first institutional solo exhibition in Europe, entitled "A dark theme keeps me here, I'll make a broken music". The exhibition ran from December 17, 2016 to March 5, 2017 at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf. The exhibition attracted over 25,000 guests from all walks of life. The Director of the HKETO Berlin, Ms Betty Ho, spoke at a closing ceremony for the exhibition.

Having presented his work at international events and venues such as the Asia Triennial Manchester, Moscow Biennale of Young Art, Amos Anderson Art Museum in Helsinki and Today Art Museum in Beijing, as well as being the inaugural winner of the Art Basel-BMW Art Journey Award 2015, Mr Young chose the Kunsthalle for his premier in Germany in 2016-17.

Mr Young's multidisciplinary educational background sharpened his artistic senses, enabling various perspectives to interact in harmony in his work. His designs are not confined to music, but are also interwoven with live performances, walks, drawings, films and installations. Based on solid research and investigations, he often makes reference to history in his work, while using sound and music to recreate historic events in the present. To demonstrate his unique presentation of art, Mr Young and professional musicians from his team also provided music at the exhibition by giving live performances at the Kunsthalle.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Ms Ho said, "Mr Young has fully demonstrated in his exhibition the diversity and versatility that Hong Kong culture embraces. We are a city built on Chinese soil, and we blossom on the international stage against a rich historic backdrop. While our artists are breaking through the boundaries and making their names known overseas, Hong Kong is also attracting talents from all over the world to enrich our local art scene. Indeed, Hong Kong is developing into Asia’s arts and design metropolis."

With its fourth edition in March 2016, Art Basel in Hong Kong has positioned itself as the most important art fair in Asia, drawing nearly 70 000 visitors last year and impressing directors, curators, trustees and patrons of leading cultural institutions from across the world. Furthermore, the unique satellite event Art Central welcomed more than 32 000 art collectors, buyers and visitors from Hong Kong and around the world. In Hong Kong, both local and relocated talents put their heads together and bring new ideas in architecture, visual arts, fashion, design, multimedia and other creative fields.
