Forty citizens commended for helping police fight crime (with photos)
*********************************************************************
Forty citizens who helped the Police fight crime were commended at the Good Citizen Award (GCA) Presentation Ceremony today (March 2).

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Management), Mr Chau Kwok-leung, pointed out that the crime figures in 2016 decreased to a record-low level since 1978 as a result of the concerted efforts of the Police and the community, noting that citizens were willing to join hands with the Police to fight crime and safeguard the city, making it a safe and stable place to live. Being the best examples, he commended the courage and alertness of the GCA recipients today.

Mr Chau thanked the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring this meaningful programme, which encourages citizens to report crime and stand up for justice. He also thanked the Fight Crime Committee and District Fight Crime Committee members for their contributions in maintaining law and order.

Three of today’s awardees also received the Good Citizen of the Year Award (GCYA) 2016. With the help of the awardees, more than 30 persons were arrested for a variety of offences including wounding, telephone deception, theft, robbery, indecent assault and possession of a dangerous drug.

Ms Chan Po-ki, Ms Kong Suk-kuen and Mr Leung Wing-keung, winners of GCYA, helped the Police to subdue a man, who snatched a police revolver in a hospital in September 2014. The man was finally convicted of possession of firearms without a license, reckless use of firearms and wounding and was sentenced to forty months’ imprisonment at the High Court.

The eldest awardee, Mr Lau Shek-fai, helped intercepting and subduing a man who robbed a woman’s handbag. The man was convicted of robbery and sentenced to thirty-two months’ imprisonment.

Presented twice a year, the Award is organised by the Police Public Relations Branch and sponsored by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce. Each of the awardees receives a certificate and a cheque of $3,000. The GCYA winner was also presented with a plaque and a cheque of $4,000. More than 4,000 persons have been commended over the years.
