Cluster of Multi-drug Resistant Acinetobacter cases in Princess Margaret Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Princess Margaret Hospital made the following announcement today (February 23):
 
     Three male patients (aged 63 to 89) of a medical ward have been confirmed to have Multi-drug Resistant Acinetobacter (MDRA) since February 14. Two of the patients passed away on February 19 and 21 due to their underlying diseases, while the remaining one is still hospitalised under medical surveillance and isolation with stable condition.
 
     The following enhanced infection control measures have already been adopted:
 
  1. Enhanced cleaning and disinfection of the ward concerned;
  2. Application of stringent contact precautions and enhanced hand hygiene;
  3. Enhanced environmental sampling for monitoring; and
  4. Enhanced attention to contamination-prone procedures.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up. The hospital will continue to closely monitor the situation of the ward.
