"The Delectable Bamboo" exhibition launched in Citywalk 2 (with photos)
***********************************************************************
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) has launched a roving exhibition entitled "The Delectable Bamboo" at Citywalk 2 which will run until March 5. The exhibition features bamboo-related dishes and tableware, as well as collections from the Palace Museum and museums in Hong Kong, allowing members of the public to discover the close relationship between bamboo and their daily lives.

The exhibition is divided into two sections, one of which displays the role of bamboo in making royal delicacies, from the alcoholic drink zhuyeqing to dishes like steamed bamboo-node rolls, shredded bamboo shoots in shark's fin soup, fresh bamboo shoots in hotpot combo, longjing and bamboo fungus soup and stewed chicken with spring bamboo shoots. Bamboo can also be seen in dining utensils, such as bamboo node-shaped teapots, bowls with bamboo patterns and wine warmers with bamboo designs.

Another section of the exhibition displays the diversity of bamboo-related food and beverages in Chinese folk culture. Bamboo leaves can be used for wrapping rice dumplings, steaming spare ribs and glutinous rice cake, or making teas like tea wrapped in bamboo shoot shell; bamboo shoots can be stewed or included in shrimp dumpling ingredients; bamboo stems can be used to cook rice; bamboo roots can be used for making soup; and bamboo fungus can also be used in making scrambled eggs and stewed Chinese pear soup. There are also utensils made of bamboo, such as bamboo baskets and sieves.

The exhibition shows the great variety of uses for bamboo, from cold dishes to main courses, from sauces to beverages. Visitors can discover the clever uses of bamboo in ancient Chinese culinary practices, as well as learning about its common uses in Chinese food culture and eating habits.

With animation display zones and interactive paper printing games with bamboo-related blessings, the exhibition is set to introduce the delicacies of Chinese bamboo dishes. The LCSD will also collaborate with Citywalk to hold a "Bamboo is Exquisite" educational workshop on March 4, enabling participants to explore Chinese culture through the different applications of bamboo in the lives of people dating from Chinese palaces to our everyday lives. For enquiries, please call 2614 3887 during office hours.

The exhibition is being held at Event Hall, UG/F, Citywalk 2 with opening hours from 10am to 10pm. Members of the public are welcome to visit for free.

The roving exhibition and the workshop are parts of the "In Touch with Palace Museum" campaign launched by the LCSD from the end of 2016 to July 2017. Through a series of exhibitions and educational activities related to the arts and culture of the Palace Museum, the campaign highlights the essence of traditional Chinese culture and its modern connotations. The activities will be held in various districts, allowing members of the public to discover that far being anachronistic or outmoded, traditional culture still holds a wealth of wisdom for their daily lives.
