**********************************************************************
The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, today (November 30) presented commendation certificates and pins to 36 volunteer leaders and 20 youth volunteer leaders of youth uniformed groups in recognition of their contributions in promoting youth training and development.

The presentations were made at the Secretary for Home Affairs' Commendation Scheme Presentation Ceremony 2016, at which Mr Lau also congratulated and extended his gratitude to the volunteer leaders. He praised them for their continuous efforts and selfless dedication in training numerous young members, so as to pass on the proud tradition of uniformed groups and help them become responsible and enthusiastic young people.

Mr Lau said that youth uniformed groups are one of the important platforms for the promotion of youth development. He noted that the Home Affairs Bureau has been working closely with them to encourage young people to acquire knowledge beyond regular classes by participating in uniformed groups and taking part in activities such as leadership training and outdoor expeditions. It is hoped that young people can develop positive values, broaden their horizons and enhance their confidence and sense of responsibility as well as learn about co-operation and discipline with an aim to attaining whole-person development, he added.

He said he hoped the uniformed groups would continue to make concerted efforts to actively explore more diversified youth development activities to benefit more young people. He also encouraged the volunteer leaders of uniformed groups to make positive impacts on the next generation's personal growth through their passion and life experience.

Established in 2002, the Secretary for Home Affairs' Commendation Scheme aims at recognising the efforts and contributions of uniformed group volunteer leaders in youth development. All the volunteer leaders commended in the ceremony have provided services in their respective uniformed groups for at least 10 years. A category for youth volunteer leaders was added under the commendation scheme in 2014. The youth volunteer leaders commended are aged 30 or below and have served their respective uniformed groups for at least five years.
