The Tsuen Wan District Council (TWDC) today (November 11) held the Tsuen Wan District Signature Project Scheme (SPS) "Redevelopment of the Sai Lau Kok Garden" Ground-breaking Ceremony at the Garden, marking the start of the construction stage of the project. The SPS aims to improve the accessibility of the Garden and introduce various kinds of community facilities.

In the 2013 Policy Address, the Chief Executive announced that funding would be earmarked for each of the 18 District Councils to take forward their SPS projects. In this connection, a Task Force was set up under the TWDC. After conducting an extensive local consultation and striking a balance among community aspirations, competing priorities of district needs and the feasibility of different proposals, the Task Force decided to undertake the Redevelopment of the Sai Lau Kok Garden project under the Tsuen Wan District SPS.

The project comprises the redevelopment of the Garden as a podium garden with connection to the existing footbridge network on the upper level to improve pedestrian flow and its accessibility. A multi-purpose centre will be constructed on the ground level of the Garden. Construction is expected to be completed in 2019.

The Chairman of the TWDC, Mr Chung Wai-ping, shared with guests the milestones of the project at the ground-breaking ceremony. He thanked the TWDC members, district personalities, the Tsuen Wan District Office, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and the Architectural Services Department (ArchSD) for their support and said he looked forward to the new-look Garden, which will provide a pleasant public space for public enjoyment.

Other officiating guests at the ground-breaking ceremony were the Vice Chairman of the TWDC, Mr Wong Wai-kit; former Chairman of the TWDC Mr Chau How-chen; the District Officer (Tsuen Wan), Miss Jenny Yip; the District Leisure Manager (Tsuen Wan) of the LCSD, Mr Horman Chan; and the Project Director of ArchSD, Mrs Alice Yu.
