Ryoji Ikeda's "superposition" to connect essence of sound and image with quantum mechanics (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
Lauded as "the master of minimalist electronica", Ryoji Ikeda will integrate physical phenomena, mathematical concepts, human control and randomness into the astonishing multimedia work "superposition" this month.

Inspired by the world of quantum mechanics, this production by Ikeda unusually features two performers who play various non-musical instruments and interact with 21 video screens of different sizes, observing nature from infinitesimal perspectives. To Ikeda, nature is everywhere, from the microscopic to the mighty, and try as we might to understand it, the unimaginable vastness will always keep secrets beyond the grasp of the human mind.

Ikeda's "superposition" was commissioned by Festival d'Automne à Paris and its world première was held at the Centre Pompidou. ArtAsiaPacific hailed it as "an astonishing work".

Ikeda is renowned for utilising the beauty of mathematical precision to draw out the essence of sound and image, igniting a completely new visceral and aesthetic experience. Over the past two decades, he has been exploring a wide range of creative formats, including live performance, installation and audio recording. Ikeda has collaborated with prominent artists and groups, such as Japan's avant-garde multimedia collective Dumb Type, choreographer William Forsythe and architect Toyo Ito, and has received numerous international awards, including the Golden Nica Award, the Giga-Hertz Award and the Prix Ars Electronica Collide@CERN 2014.

Ikeda's "superposition" is one of the programmes of the New Vision Arts Festival. It will be staged at 8pm on November 18 and 19 at the Sha Tin Town Hall Auditorium. Tickets priced at $120, $180, $260 and $300 are now available at URBTIX (www.urbtix.hk). For credit card telephone bookings, please call 2111 5999.
