******************************************************************************************
To enhance parents' awareness, knowledge and skills in handling the drug problem, the Narcotics Division of the Security Bureau (ND), the Action Committee Against Narcotics (ACAN) and Radio Television Hong Kong's Radio 5 (RTHK-5) jointly organised the Star Parents Programme 2015-16. Over the past year various anti-drug activities were conducted under the programme, which were well received and supported by the community and parents.

Over 100 parents attended the closing ceremony of the Star Parents Programme 2015-16 today (November 8), to show their strong support for the anti-drug cause and pledge to help their children resist the temptation of drugs.

Officiating at the closing ceremony, the Chairman of the ACAN, Dr Ben Cheung, said that good parent-child relationships and a caring family environment provide an important defence against young people falling prey to drugs or developing other behavioural problems. Dr Cheung explained to the participants the harm of abusing different kinds of drugs and especially "Ice" (methamphetamine). He also encouraged parents to strengthen their communication skills with their children and to equip themselves with knowledge about the drug problem in order to protect their children from drugs.

Also officiating at the closing ceremony, the Commissioner for Narcotics, Ms Manda Chan, said, "Parents' increased care for their children can help building closer relationships and mutual trust in the family, which is important for supporting their children in resisting the temptations of drugs. We also encourage parents who find that their children may have a drug problem to seek help from professional social workers through the ND's 24-hour hotline 186 186, or sending messages to 98 186 186 by WhatsApp or WeChat."

Three parent-oriented workshops were organised under the Star Parents Programme 2015-16, with about 300 parent participants. At the workshops, experts were invited to give talks on different topics such as parenting stress, family economics, parent-child relationships and parent-child communications. In addition, a 24-episode radio drama series featuring family, children and drugs issues based on real stories was produced by RTHK and broadcast on the RTHK-5 radio programme "Stand by Me". As part of the programme, professionals were invited to discussion sessions to share their views on how to deal with different parenting and drug problems, and to educate members of the public about the harm caused by drugs.

Other officiating guests at today's closing event included the Acting Assistant Director of Broadcasting (Radio and Corporate Programming), Miss Jace Au, and artistes Mimi Chu and Stephanie Ho. For details of the programme, please visit the designated webpage.
